Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients:

For the Marinade:

  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger (optional)

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 teaspoons water)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (adjust to taste)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the beef:
    • In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Add the sliced beef and toss to coat. Let it marinate for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Prepare the sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, beef broth, and black pepper. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and set aside.
  3. Cook the beef:
    • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the beef in a single layer and sear for 1–2 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Stir-fry vegetables:
    • In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil. Stir-fry the bell peppers and onions for 2–3 minutes, until they’re slightly softened but still crisp. Add the garlic and ginger, cooking for another 30 seconds.
  5. Combine and cook:
    • Return the beef to the skillet. Pour in the prepared sauce and toss everything together. Cook for 2–3 minutes, until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and vegetables.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
