This classic Patty Melt combines juicy ground beef, caramelized onions, and gooey melted cheese between crispy, buttery bread—comfort food at its finest!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread (or bread of your choice)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese (or American/cheddar)
  • 4 tbsp butter (softened for spreading)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions
    • Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft (about 10-15 minutes).
    • Set the onions aside once caramelized.
  2. Prepare the Beef Patties
    • In a bowl, mix the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Form the mixture into 4 thin, flat patties (similar to the size of your bread slices).
  3. Cook the Beef Patties
    • In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side or until fully cooked.
    • Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Assemble the Patty Melts
    • Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
    • Place 4 slices of bread, butter side down, in a skillet or griddle.
    • Add 1 slice of cheese, 1 beef patty, a portion of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese on each.
    • Top with the second slice of bread, butter side up.
  5. Toast the Sandwiches
    • Cook the sandwiches on medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
    • Press lightly with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
  6. Serve
    • Slice in half and enjoy while warm!

Tips:

  • Use rye bread for a classic flavor, but sourdough or white bread works too.
  • For extra flavor, add a smear of spicy mustard or mayo before assembling.
  • Keep the heat on medium to avoid burning the bread before the cheese melts.

Enjoy this crispy, cheesy, and savory Ground Beef Patty Melt—perfect for lunch or dinner!
