This classic Patty Melt combines juicy ground beef, caramelized onions, and gooey melted cheese between crispy, buttery bread—comfort food at its finest!
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 8 slices rye bread (or bread of your choice)
- 8 slices Swiss cheese (or American/cheddar)
- 4 tbsp butter (softened for spreading)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions
- Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft (about 10-15 minutes).
- Set the onions aside once caramelized.
- Prepare the Beef Patties
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Form the mixture into 4 thin, flat patties (similar to the size of your bread slices).
- Cook the Beef Patties
- In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side or until fully cooked.
- Remove from heat and set aside.
- Assemble the Patty Melts
- Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
- Place 4 slices of bread, butter side down, in a skillet or griddle.
- Add 1 slice of cheese, 1 beef patty, a portion of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese on each.
- Top with the second slice of bread, butter side up.
- Toast the Sandwiches
- Cook the sandwiches on medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Press lightly with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
- Serve
- Slice in half and enjoy while warm!
Tips:
- Use rye bread for a classic flavor, but sourdough or white bread works too.
- For extra flavor, add a smear of spicy mustard or mayo before assembling.
- Keep the heat on medium to avoid burning the bread before the cheese melts.
