This soft, slightly sweet Amish white bread is a versatile classic. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying with butter and jam!
Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 6 cups bread flour
Instructions
1. Activate the Yeast:
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water.
- Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
2. Mix the Dough:
- Stir in the salt and vegetable oil.
- Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
5. Shape the Loaves:
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal parts.
- Shape each portion into a loaf and place in two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
6. Second Rise:
- Cover the pans with a clean towel and let the dough rise for another 30-40 minutes, or until it’s about an inch above the edge of the pans.
7. Bake the Bread:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
8. Cool and Serve:
- Remove the loaves from the pans and let them cool on a wire rack.
- Slice and enjoy!
Tips:
- For a softer crust, brush the tops with melted butter right after baking.
- Store in an airtight container to keep the bread fresh for several days.
- Freeze extra loaves for up to 3 months.
