Beef Pizza Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Crust:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
For the Filling:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce or marinara sauce
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup pepperoni slices (optional)
- 1/2 cup sliced bell peppers or mushrooms (optional)
For Topping:
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for brushing)
- Fresh basil leaves (optional for garnish)
Instructions:
- Make the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until the mixture is bubbly and frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until the dough begins to form.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Prepare the Beef Filling:
- While the dough is rising, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until softened.
- Stir in the pizza sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Assemble the Pie:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two portions—one for the bottom and one for the top.
- Roll out the larger portion of dough into a circle large enough to fit into a 9-inch pie pan or deep-dish pizza pan.
- Place the dough into the pan, pressing it into the bottom and up the sides.
- Spread the beef mixture evenly over the crust. Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese, and add optional toppings like pepperoni or vegetables.
- Roll out the second portion of dough and place it over the top of the pie. Seal the edges by pinching them together and then cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
- Bake the Pie:
- Brush the top of the pie with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.
- Serve:
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired, and serve hot.
This Beef Pizza Pie is a hearty, cheesy dish that combines the flavors of pizza with the comfort of a savory pie. Enjoy!
