Amish White Bread Recipe

This soft, slightly sweet Amish white bread is a versatile classic. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying with butter and jam!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • ⅔ cup white sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups bread flour

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast:

  • In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water.
  • Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2. Mix the Dough:

  • Stir in the salt and vegetable oil.
  • Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.

3. Knead the Dough:

  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

4. First Rise:

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

5. Shape the Loaves:

  • Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal parts.
  • Shape each portion into a loaf and place in two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.

6. Second Rise:

  • Cover the pans with a clean towel and let the dough rise for another 30-40 minutes, or until it’s about an inch above the edge of the pans.

7. Bake the Bread:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

8. Cool and Serve:

  • Remove the loaves from the pans and let them cool on a wire rack.
  • Slice and enjoy!

Tips:

  • For a softer crust, brush the tops with melted butter right after baking.
  • Store in an airtight container to keep the bread fresh for several days.
  • Freeze extra loaves for up to 3 months.

This simple and satisfying bread recipe will quickly become a family favorite! 🍞
