Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers Recipe
Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers are a classic diner favorite, featuring thin, crispy beef patties pressed with caramelized onions for unbeatable flavor.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio for best flavor)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices American cheese (or your favorite cheese)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 tbsp butter or oil, for toasting buns
- Optional: Pickles, ketchup, mustard, or other toppings
Instructions:
- Prepare the Onions
- Thinly slice the onion (use a mandoline for uniform slices if available).
- Divide the onions into 4 equal portions.
- Form the Beef Patties
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal balls (about 1/4 lb each).
- Flatten slightly and season generously with salt and black pepper.
- Heat the Skillet
- Heat a large cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add a touch of oil if needed.
- Cook the Burgers with Onions
- Place a beef ball onto the hot skillet and immediately top with one portion of onions.
- Use a sturdy spatula to firmly press the beef into a thin patty, embedding the onions into the meat. Cook for 2–3 minutes, until the edges are crispy.
- Flip and Cook
- Flip the patty, pressing down again to ensure the onions caramelize. Cook for another 1–2 minutes. Place a slice of cheese on top to melt.
- Toast the Buns
- Spread butter on the insides of the buns and toast them in a separate skillet until golden brown.
- Assemble the Burgers
- Place each patty on a toasted bun. Add your favorite condiments or toppings like pickles, ketchup, and mustard.
- Serve and Enjoy
- Serve immediately with fries or chips for a complete meal.
Tips:
- Use yellow onions for a classic flavor or sweet onions for extra caramelized sweetness.
- For extra crispy edges, press the patties as thin as possible.
