Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steaks:
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably plain)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
For the Onion Gravy:
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
    • Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval patties (depending on desired size).
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
  2. Make the Onion Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are softened and lightly caramelized.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well to create a roux. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
    • Gradually add the beef broth, stirring to prevent lumps from forming. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper.
    • Bring the gravy to a simmer, cooking for about 3-5 minutes, until it thickens.
  3. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet with the onion gravy. Spoon some gravy over the patties.
    • Cover the skillet and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the steaks to heat through.
    • Serve the Salisbury steaks with the onion gravy poured over them. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables for a complete meal.
