Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Salisbury Steaks:
- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably plain)
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
For the Onion Gravy:
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Make the Salisbury Steaks:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval patties (depending on desired size).
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
- Make the Onion Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are softened and lightly caramelized.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well to create a roux. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Gradually add the beef broth, stirring to prevent lumps from forming. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer, cooking for about 3-5 minutes, until it thickens.
- Combine and Serve:
- Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet with the onion gravy. Spoon some gravy over the patties.
- Cover the skillet and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the steaks to heat through.
- Serve the Salisbury steaks with the onion gravy poured over them. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables for a complete meal.
