Simple Hamburger and Potato Casserole Recipe


Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3–4 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken soup)
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for greasing the dish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil or butter.
  2. Cook Ground Beef:
    Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and onion, cooking until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Drain any excess fat. Season with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:
    In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
  4. Assemble the Casserole:
    • Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the greased baking dish.
    • Spread half of the cooked ground beef over the potatoes.
    • Pour half of the soup mixture over the beef.
    • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef, and soup mixture.
  5. Bake:
    Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  6. Add Cheese (Optional):
    Remove the foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top, and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the potatoes are tender.
  7. Cool and Serve:
    Let the casserole cool for 5–10 minutes before serving.
